Kapaun assistant tapped as new WHS coach

Troy Lallemand – an assistant coach at Kapaun Mt. Carmel in Wichita the last four years, has been chosen as the new Winfield High School basketball coach. He replaces Rob Fields, who was fired just as the season ended earlier this year.

Lallemand’s hiring is not official until he’s approved by the board of education. That’s is expected to happen Monday. He was selected from a pool of more than 30 candidates, district officials said in a written statement.

Fields made just over $7,000 in additional salary each year to coach basketball. Details of Lallemand’s compensation were not provided.

Lallemand will also be a teacher in the high school’s physical education program.

"I am very excited about both the challenges and opportunities which await the Winfield boys’ basketball program," Lallemand said. "We have the potential to experience a lot of growth."

A graduate of Missouri Southern State University, Lallemand has been assistant boys’ basketball coach at Kapaun-Mt. Carmel high school in Wichita for the last four years where he has taught physical education and also assisted with football and baseball coaching.

He has been a camp coach for the Bill Self Summer Basketball Camp for several years and also been the director of the Eastside Basketball Academy which consists of more than 250 student players.

At Kapaun, Lallemand has taught freshman physical education, advanced PE classes and weightlifting.

Lallemand’s wife, Kyle, is completing an elementary education degree. Kyle is originally from Frontenac and Troy is from Girard.

They anticipate moving to Winfield as soon as possible.

The couple visited Winfield Friday, touring the middle and high schools and the Winfield Recreation Commission facilities.
