4 Newkirk inmates escape; Stolen car sought

Authorities are searching for four inmates who escaped from the custody of the Kay County Jail early this morning, according to the Kay County Sheriff’s office. The men are considered dangerous.

The men who escaped were identified as Ponca Green, Benito Bustos, Kenneth Sherrod and Doyle Bertschy.

They are believed to driving a stolen, four-door vehicle bearing the license plate 961AXN, according to the a department spokesperson. The direction in which they traveled after obtaining the vehicle is unknown.

One of the men is possibly injured. The incident occurred between 5 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. when the men slipped out of a window at the facility.
