Pizza Hut pursuing plans for Winfield eatery

Pizza Hut in Winfield is moving forward with plans for a new restaurant at the corner of 19th and Main, city and restaurant officials confirmed Friday.

The city has received copies of preliminary plans for a new eatery in the building that was home to Taco Tico before it closed in August 2008, according to Gary Mangus, assistant to the city manager. Representatives for Pizza Hut have yet to apply for building permits, which are needed before any work could start.

A manager at the restaurant on south Main said he knew only that the Taco Tico building was to be torn down in the coming weeks. All other questions regarding the new project were referred to the restaurant’s general manager, who was not available for comment.

Taco Tico closed last year after 20 years in business. At the time, property owner Leonard Richardson said Pizza Hut had been interested in purchasing the property for expansion purposes.

Richardson said his company, Richardson Brothers, sold the property to a holding company representing Pizza Hut late last summer. At the time, he said, it seemed the idea was to build a restaurant similar to a Pizza Hut Wing Street in Arkansas City.

"I think they might have held off a little due to the economy," Richardson said Friday. "I’m not sure where they’re at with it now."
