Caught with pot: Plants found at a local home

Winfield police found pot plants growing in a garage at a local home Monday and arrested a person staying at the home, Lt. Frank Owens said.

Cody A. Chaisson, 21, was taken to jail and faces charges in connection with growing possessing marijuana. He later bonded out.

Police served a search warrant at the home around 9:20 p.m after getting citizen complaints about unusual activity at the home. Owens said that some surveillance was conducted on the home and police confirmed unusual behavior.

Chaisson arrived at the house after the police search began and was interviewed very briefly before being arrested. The residence, at 1619 Hackney, is a rental and Chaisson was not a legal resident of the home because his name was not on the rental agreement, Owens said.

Police turned up some pots plants growing in an attached garage and also uncovered some related paraphernalia.

Owens said police this year have investigated four or five instances where marijuana plants have been found growing. In most instances, the plants are kept by younger people who are mostly "experimenting," he said.

"In this case, it appears it may go a little beyond experimentation," Owens said.
