Local group gets grant to fight teen smoking

A Winfield group has received a $1,500 grant to combat tobacco use among local teenagers.

Cowley County TASK is receiving the money from the Tobacco Free Kansas Coalition. TASK is a state-wide youth moment against tobacco use.

The local TASK group, led by students from the Southwestern Leadership program will be handing out cards at the college’s homecoming game and at Winfield Sonic during happy hour Oct. 18.

The cards will provide information about an upcoming activity to be held 7:30 p.m., Oct. 23 at the student center at Southwestern. All Cowley County youth ages 12-17 are encouraged to attend this networking ice cream social.

TASK hopes to build a network of interested youth within the county to educate the youth on the dangers of Secondhand smoke, start to build a support system for those youth trying to quit smoking and encouraging teens not to start smoking or using other tobacco products.

The Tobacco Free Kansas Coalition, Inc. received a grant from the American Legacy Foundation, a national public health foundation devoted to tobacco use prevention and cessation, to support youth tobacco prevention efforts in Kansas.

Additional funding to TFKC for this youth empowerment project comes from the Kansas Health Foundation.
