Shoplifting probe leads to theft, drug charges

An Ark City man remains in the Cowley County Jail Tuesday after a weekend shoplifting investigation turned up stolen property and drugs, police said.

Kyle Staab, 27, faces two counts of theft by shoplifting and one count each of possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of methamphetamine. He is being held on a $12,000 bond, according to a jail spokesperson.

Staab was arrested Saturday when a store manager at Colortyme on N. Summit called to say someone had just stolen a Sony PlayStation Portable from the store. A description was given of a white male wearing a camouflage jacket.

Police found Staab ? who matched the description ? in a nearby store parking lot and he was found to have the portable game console, according to a report from police. A second suspect, Jeffrey W. Burnett, 46, Ark City, was standing outside the Colortyme and was implicated in the incident.

A store official said it was Burnett who initially walked out with the game system. Burnett was arrested and faces shoplifting charges.

A search of Staab led to the discovery of a baggie with a white substance that field testing indicated was meth. When the suspect was searched more thoroughly at the police station, officers found scales, a razor blade, filter and more drugs, according to the report.

Staab also was in possession of a pair of blue jeans that appeared to be from Wal-Mart. Further investigation and a discussion with Burnett at his residence led to the discovery of a camera, tripod, shirt and laptop computer console.

These items were taken from Wal-Mart, police said. Other items were found as well.
