WHS grad suffers minor injury in rollover Sat.

Winfield’s Kelsi Schaefer credits a "true miracle of God" with allowing her to escape serious injury in a rollover accident Saturday in Indiana.

Schaefer ? a 2007 graduate of Winfield High School ? attends Moody Bible Institute in Chicago and was on a trip with her volleyball team when the accident occurred. She and four other girls were traveling in one of two school vans heading back to Chicago from a regional tournament in Michigan.

Schaefer, 20, was in the backseat of the van watching a movie on her computer when the driver, Nathaniel Livingston, 21, Chicago, fell asleep and lost control of the vehicle.

News reports from Indiana indicate the van was westbound on I-94 around 4:45 p.m when the accident occurred. It crossed at least two lanes of traffic and rolled twice before ending up in three feet of water.

The vehicle came to rest upright in some marshland alongside the road, Schaefer said.

Four of the girls, including Schaefer, were taken to an emergency room and released about five hours later. Schaefer said she hit her head several times and is dealing with some pain and stiffness in her back and neck.

One passenger suffered a neck injury that will require ongoing treatment, but all involved are out of the hospital. Only the bus driver was wearing a seat belt.

Schaefer’s parents, Scott and Connie Schaefer, live in Winfield.
