Work has begun on $193,000 worth of roadwork in Winfield that is part of an annual effort to improve local streets.
City manager Warren Porter said lower asphalt costs have allowed the city to do more street repair than was done last year when the price was rising. The work is under way now and should be completed in the next two weeks or so.
Work on the projects is being done by Hutchinson-based contractor APAC-Shears Construction. The work includes the addition of approximately 40 new wheelchair ramps for the disabled.
This is the first year that street projects were chosen by the city’s new Street and Transportation Advisory Committee. The panel consists of a number of members chosen from the community to consider what projects will be undertaken.
For the past several years, the city has spent just under $200,000 annually to improve the nearly 100 miles of paved roads in the city, Porter said.
The areas that will undergo work are:
Janes Ave. from College to McCabe.
McCabe from Janes to Warren
Pine from Massachusetts to Warren
Minnesota from Fourth to Olive
Elizabeth from Mound east about 650 feet
Menor one block north from 19th
Stevens just south of Warren to Simpson
Park Ave. – the two northern most blocks
