WHS senior arrested for striking other student

A senior at Winfield High School was arrested Wednesday after striking another student in the face during the school’s lunch period, according to police.

Garrett E. Zerener, 18, was booked into the Cowley County Jail on a single count of battery. His bond was set at $750 and he bonded out about two hours after the incident took place, according to a jail spokesperson.

Police arrived at the school around 1:30 p.m in response to a report that a student had been injured in a fight. That student’s name has not been made public.

Zerener had his arm around his girlfriend when another male student approached the girl and put his arm around her, according to a report on the incident. The other student reportedly whispered something to the girl and Zerener struck the male student in the face three or more times, police chief Danny Parker said.

"Evidently he took offense to whatever it was that was said," Parker said.

Zerener and the other male student did not exchange words and Zerener told police he didn’t know the other student. Parker said the other student suffered injuries to the face and was taken to the hospital for treatment.
