Gerald Ehmke

Gerald L. Ehmke, 91, of Winfield, passed away Tuesday, April 27, 2010, at William Newton Hospital.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel. Visitation will be from 3 ? 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Family will greet friends from 6 ? 7:30 p.m. Interment will be at Mt. Vernon Cemetery.

Memorials have been established with the First United Methodist Church and Helping Hands.

Ehmke was born February 8, 1919, in Vernon Township in Cowley County to Harvey J. and Kathryne (Schmidt) Ehmke. He was raised and educated in Cowley County, graduating from Winfield High School in 1937.

He married Roberta Jean Fry on September 18, 1949, in Winfield. She survives.

He was a life long resident of Cowley County. He and Roberta farmed in Vernon Township west of Winfield for many years. This was the family farm where Gerald grew up. During WW II he worked for Beech Aircraft in Wichita and then Sterling Manufacturing in Derby after the war.

He was a former member of the Vernon Township Board and the School District 48 Board. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Roberta Jean, of the home; his son, Bruce Ehmke, Winfield; a brother, Donald, and wife, Ruth Ehmke, Winfield; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Mildred Andrews.
