Thieves targeting vehicles with GPS systems

What seems to be an organized group of auto burglars has been targeting Winfield vehicles and grabbing GPS systems, Police Chief Danny Parker said Tuesday.

Officers have investigated nine or more similar incidents in the past 10 days or so. Usually the thief or thieves find a car with a GPS system, break a window of the vehicle and steal the GPS.

Investigators believe those responsible may be associates of two people arrested north of Winfield Sunday on auto theft and burglary charges. Parker thinks a group of several people may be going around, breaking into cars and then selling the merchandise

Keeping cars locked and valuable items out of plain sight can help reduce the risk of being targeted, law enforcement officials said.
