William Neil

William Neil, 86, of Winfield, Kan., passed away Wednesday evening, May 26, 2010, at the Life Care Center of Andover.

Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, June 2, 2010, at 11 a.m. at Grace Episcopal Church in Winfield. Miles Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials have been established in Mr. Neil’s name for the American Alzheimer’s Association and for the American Heart Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Born November 3, 1923, in Bridge of Weir, Scotland, he was the son of Hugh and Mary (Martin) Neil. He served in the British Navy and lived in Scotland until the 1940’s when he moved to the United States.

William met his future wife, Mary Murray, in Johnstone, Scotland, and the couple was united in marriage on August 1, 1953, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. They made their first home in Kearny, New Jersey, where they lived most of their lives. He worked as a mechanic at the New Jersey Post Office. William and Mary moved to Winfield in 1994. Mary preceded him in death on July 19, 2006.

William enjoyed golfing and gardening.

He is survived by his daughters, Mary Elizabeth Smith and husband, David, and Valerie Stoll and husband, Rick, all of Winfield; his grandsons, Frank and Matthew; and his sister, Margaret Mason of Pennsylvania.

In addition to his parents and wife, William was preceded in death by his sons, William Martin and Bruce Robert, his brothers, Sonny and John, and his sister, Nan Neil.
