Winfield taking applications for next academy

Applications are now being accepted for the fourth annual Citizens Academy Program conducted by the Winfield Police Department. The deadline to apply is Aug. 16.

The academy is a 12-week program held each Thursday from Sept. 2 to Dec. 3, with a break over the Thanksgiving Holiday. Classes are from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Citizens are taught about law enforcement procedures in an effort by police to promote a better understanding of law enforcement through education. Participants must live or work in Winfield.

Students are placed in hands on scenarios designed to show them situations from an officer’s perspective.

Topics covered in the program include: search and seizure laws, crime scene investigation, traffic stops, drug investigations, death investigations, raid planning, court room testimony, S.W.A.T., K9, stress management, Tazer, use of force, K-9 and many others. Students will also get to participate in ride alongs with the Winfield Police Department and Cowley County Sheriff’s Office.

Students will tour area law enforcement facilities and participate in range and firearms instruction.

Applicants must be at least 21 and be free of felony convictions. A brief application must also be completed and can be picked up at the Winfield Police Dept. at any time.
