Mueller: Part found at Strother was WWII era

The small piece of a bomb ? found at Strother Field last week ? was a portion of an old detonator from a World War II-era cluster bomb, Cowley County undersheriff Bill Mueller said Monday.

NewsCow readers had some additional questions about what was found and Mueller provided a few more details. The item was around four inches long and was found in a wheat field.

Explosive ordinance officials from McConnell Air Force Base moved the item to a more remote area of Strother and destroyed it with explosives, a common practice. The item was harmless.

Mueller confirmed there was a picture taken of the item but said there wasn’t much to see.

"Really it looks like a rock to anyone who doesn’t know what they’re looking at," he said. "It’s old and worn and had been tossed around by farm equipment."
