5 Winfield schools recognized for test scores

Five schools in Winfield earned the highest level of achievement on state reading and math assessment tests taken last spring, USD 465 officials announced Tuesday.

"This is the largest number of Standards of Excellence we have earned in any year, representing a district-wide effort to focus on standards over time," KayLynn Smith, the district’s curriculum director, said. "We have always believed that true academic gains are incremental and take time to develop. Student performance at the high school in particular is a result of years of effort on the part of students and their teachers."

Requirements vary depending on grade level, but each grade must have no more than 10 percent of students finish in the lowest achievement category and least 15 to 25 percent finish in the high category, Smith said.

Schools that do this are recognized for achieving the standard of excellence.

These are the local schools and subjects that earned that honor this year, according to the Kansas Dept. of Education in Topeka:

Winfield High School – school-wide reading and school-wide math

Winfield Middle School – 7th grade reading, 8th grade reading, and school-wide reading

Winfield Intermediate School – school-wide Reading

Lowell Elementary – 4th Grade Reading and school-wide reading

Country View Elementary – 4th Grade Math
