Read: Charges likely in scuffle at county jail

Aggravated battery charges are expected to be filed against two Cowley County Jail inmates accused of battering and choking another inmate late last week, sheriff Don Read said Wednesday.

Joshua Thomas Price, 23, ended up in a local emergency room around 7:30 p.m. Friday for treatment of his injuries. He originally told investigators he fell and hit his face on the floor, but later told those treating him he’d been attacked by two other men.

"We have some skirmishes from time to time," Read said. "But this appeared to a bit more serious. So he was taken to the hospital for treatment."

Price said the men "punched him and choked him out," Read said.

Two men have been identified as suspects and are expected to face charges. Their names are being withheld until formal charging documents are filed, the sheriff said.

Price was an inmate being held for the Kansas Dept. of Corrections. He was returned to the jail but was kept away from other prisoners until state corrections staff picked him up a short time later.

The incident was documented in a daily report the sheriff provides for the media and Read provided more details when asked.
