Burner causes small blaze at Greif Bros. Wed.

Fire crews were at Greif Bros. Corp. at Strother Field early Wednesday to help snuff a small equipment fire.

The fire occurred just after 5:30 a.m when a burner unit at the facility malfunctioned and flames triggered a sprinkler head at the facility, according to fire marshall Alan Stoll with the Winfield Fire Dept. Greif Bros manufactures oil barrels and burners are used to cure paint on the barrels.

Stoll said total damage done to the building was minimal. Fire crews were called because the only sprinkler head activated was not supplying enough water to snuff flames shooting from the malfunctioning machine’s intake.

Company officials spoke with Stoll about possibly adding more sprinkler heads to a beam above the burner where the fire occurred.

People inside the building were evacuated as a precaution, but the fire was small and controlled easily Stoll said.
