Windy, dry weather is creating a fire hazard

A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity and warm temperatures will create what the National Weather Service is calling an "explosive" fire growth potential.

Cowley, Sumner, Butler, and Sedgwick counties are among the 15 counties included in a red flag warning area in effect from noon to 6 p.m. Southerly winds of between 25 and 35 miles an hour are expected with near record high temperatures in the upper 60s to near 70 degrees.

The gusty winds and record temperatures will combine to create an extreme fire danger in this area, the Service predicted.

Oklahoma counties to the south of Cowley and Sumner, including Kay County, are in a high wind warning area.

Cambridge firefighters were dispatched to a grass fire east of Cambridge along U.S. 160 about 10:30 a.m. Friday. Winds were gusting between 20 and 30 miles an hour at the time in different areas of the county.

Atlanta, Burden, Dexter and Winfield fire departments were dispatched about 15 minutes later to assist Cambridge with two fires.

The Atlanta rural fire department made three runs Thursday; two of the three were to help other fire companies.

Alos, the Winfield Fire Department extinguished a fire at Lumbers Auto Thursday. Six cars were destroyed.
