County under a flood watch but rain lets up

You gotta love Kansas, especially in the Spring. Where else could you be under a flood warning, flood watch and high wind advisory all at the same time?

“You’ve got it all, ” National Weather Service meteorologist Jerilyn Billings said this morning.

If you’re not satisfied with the present weather conditions, wait a little while and it will change. A cold front is expected to move through this afternoon. The front could trigger strong storms.

“We’ll be watching throughout the day,” Billings said. “The main threat would be dime to nickel-size hail and some wind. It’s a possibility. We’re not overly excited about it.”

Winfield received 1.3 inches of rain from 7 a.m. Wednesday to 7 a.m. this morning. Cambridge received 1.44 and Rock .60. Billings didn’t have the latest information for Arkansas City.

At Ark City this morning, the Walnut River stood at 6.3 feet. Food stage is 18 feet. The Ark River at Ark City was 11.7 feet. Flood stage is 17 feet.

In Winfield, the Walnut River was 6.5 feet. Flood Stage is 18 feet.

The rivers in Cowley County are not expected to reach flood stage, Billings said.

“We’re not looking at a lot more rain in the forecast,” she said.
