Cowley County should get 3 to 5 inches snow

Cowley County can expect three to five inches of snow Thursday with a possibility of five to eight inches, Andy Kleinsasser, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Wichita, said mid-morning Wednesday.

“Another factor in this winter storm is that really strong northerly winds are going to create some potentially hazardous travel,” he said. ‘It looks like the worst of the winter storm will be from sunrise to mid-afternoon.”

South-central Kansas is under a winter storm watch beginning late tonight and continuing through Thursday. Snow is expected to develop in this area late tonight. Twenty to 30 mile an hour winds are expected with gusts even higher. Blowing and drifting snow may reduce visibility to a half a mile.

“With a big storm like this, there is always a lot of uncertainty,” Kleinsasser said. “It’s still a little early but (the information) is starting to come together. “I think right now I’m generally very confident you’ll receive three to five inches across the county,” he said.

The heaviest snow is expected east of the Kansas Turnpike. Area residents are encouraged to check through the day for the latest weather advisories.
