Lowe charged with domestic battery Tuesday; Burden mayor plans to ask he be reinstated

Burden chief of police Travis Lowe is facing a misdemeanor charge in connection with a domestic incident last month for which he was arrested, Cowley County Attorney Chris Smith said.

Lowe was in court Tuesday with his attorney Chris Rogers, of Winfield, to learn he would face a single count of domestic battery – or in the alternative, simple battery. Domestic battery is a class A misdemeanor and simple battery is a lesser charge, class B misdemeanor.

Lowe can only be convicted of one of those charges. His next scheduled court appearance is set for 8:30 a.m. on Jan. 18.

Conviction for a class A misdemeanor can bring up to a year in jail and a $2,500 fine. However, a person with little or no criminal history is unlikely to spend any time in jail, court officials said.

Because the charge and alternative charge are misdemeanors, the case is expected to move through the court system briskly.

"Something will happen fairly quickly," Smith said.

Lowe was arrested late on the evening of Nov. 21 following an incident at a home in Burden. He was later released on $750 bond. He’s been placed on paid leave.

Burden Mayor Judy Colvin said she planned to ask the city council, at its regular meeting Monday, to reinstate Lowe.

A woman was struck during the incident, however no one involved required medical attention, according to reports.
