Udall mother, daughter killed in crash

UDALL – A 10-year-old Udall girl and her mother were killed and a second child was critically injured in a four-vehicle accident Wednesday afternoon in a construction zone on K-15, five miles south of Mulvane.

Kristy McCanny, 27, and Sabin McCanny, a fourth grade student in Udall, were pronounced dead at the scene. Nine-year-old Davin McCanny, a third grade student, was transported to Wesley Medical Center in critical condition, according to the Sumner County Sheriff’s Office.

“Davin is improving. He is talking and, of course, asking for his mother,” said Loren Feldkamp, Udall school superintendent. “He is breathing on his own and we’re very hopeful this will come out as well as it can.”

The accident occurred as William McDonald, Derby, was headed north in a 2006 Ford Van. McDonald failed to see that traffic was stopped, and ran into the back of the 1995 Dodge Neon that Kristy McCanny was driving, the sheriff’s office reported.

The collision caused the Neon to strike the rear of a 2004 Mitsubishi Lancer driven by Laura Hankins. The impact moved the Lancer forward and it struck the rear of a 1996 Ford Contour being driven by being driven by Kristopher Lowmiller.

Both Hankins and Lowmiller were transported to local hospitals. McDonald refused treatment, according to the accident report.

A crisis team was on hand at Udall Elementary School this morning for students. Counselors and a minister were available to talk with students, Feldkamp said.

Davin McCanny’s grandparents were with him at the Wichita hospital Thursday morning, Feldkamp said.

The accident investigation is on-going. The hometowns for Hankins and Lowmiller were not available this morning.
