Winfield library offers summer programs

The Winfield Public Library will host “Get a Clue @ Your Library” 2007 Summer Reading Program for children and families and “You Never Know @ Your Library” for young adults, the library announced this week.

The program offers participants a chance to read books this summer and win prizes.

Parents are encouraged to get their children involved in the program. Developing the skills to read and fostering a love for books in children is one of the greatest gifts, according to the library. Reading unlocks the mysteries of the world, opens doors of opportunity, ignites the imagination and offers experiences that create well-minded thinkers for the future, the announcement said.

Library staff believes summer is an excellent time to explore books together as a family. Books are the perfect companions for car trips, time at the park, in waiting rooms and many other occasions and reading provides wonderful opportunities to enhance or create a fabulous family adventure.

The Summer Reading Program offers opportunities to set goals for summer reading. Registered children and young adults (ages birth to 17 years old) receive reading logs for easy record keeping, stickers to track their reading and cool prizes for completion of reading goals. Fun summer programs and activities are also available to those who are registered in the SRP.

Other summer programs are available at the library, including Story Time Squad, Junior Sleuth, Clue Crew and mystery movie programs. Story Time Squad Programs are available on Tuesday mornings from 10 to 11 a.m. for children ages birth to five. Children should be accompanied by an adult. Junior Sleuth Programs are offered for children ages 6 to 11 on Wednesday mornings from 10 to 11:30 am. Clue Crew Programs are offered for young adults (ages 12 to 17) on Thursday afternoons from 2:30 to 4 pm. Enjoy mystery movies at the library on Fridays from 2:30 pm until the movie ends (ages 8 and up).

In addition to a variety of programs and activities for children, the Winfield Public Library also has an Adult Reading Program this summer. This program is for anyone 18 and older. No registration is required. Adults will play “Library Bingo” to get clues about great reads. Packets with all types of Bingo cards will be available. The cards have various types of books to read, and when participants have a BINGO on a card, they may enter it for weekly drawings of prizes from June 1 through July 27. Participants can also enter a Black-out Bingo card for the grand prize drawing on July 27.

Families may play Bingo together with Family Library Blackout Bingo. These cards will also be put in a family fun grand prize drawing to be held on July 27, as well.

For those who enjoy the Friends of the Library book sales, book slips are available. For every book read during the Adult Reading Program, the Friends of the Library will be given slips for a chance to win $1 gift certificates at future book sales.

The library encourages everyone to read for fun, read to relax and read for prizes this summer at the Winfield Public Library. For more information, contact Sue Birney, special services librarian, at 221-4470.
