Westar plans open house in Ark City

Westar Energy is hosting a series of forums to discuss its plans for a new high-capacity transmission line running from Rose Hill to near Perry, Okla.

Arkansas City will be among the company’s stops on its informational tour. An open house is set for 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. June 28 at the Wright Room on the campus of Cowley College, 215 S. 2nd.

Westar and Oklahoma Gas & Electric are partnering to construct the 345 kilovolt high-capacity line. Multiple routes for the project are being considered. Surveys distributed at the open houses and other landowner feedback will help determine which route will be chosen.

The new line between the Rose Hill and Sooner substations will increase the reliability of the transmission system and the capacity to move power in the area, potentially providing utilities and their customers access to lower cost electric energy.

These lines are part of Westar’s plan to invest in long-lived infrastructure to serve Kansas well into the 21st century, the company said in a statement.

The company has retained Burns & McDonnell, of Kansas City, Mo., as its consulting engineer to help site the lines.

The open houses are scheduled from 5 to 7:30 p.m. as follows:

  • Monday, June 25, 2007, Raymond Frye Complex, 320 N. Jefferson, Wellington.
  • Wednesday, June 27, 2007, Rose Hill High School, 506 S. Rose Hill Rd., Rose Hill.
  • Thursday, June 28, 2007, Cowley College, Wright Room, 215 S. 2nd, Arkansas City.
