Bowker offers tips for a safer Fourth

Gary Bowker, fire marshal with the Winfield Fire Department, encourages the public to enjoy a fireworks display conducted by trained professionals such as the program sponsored by the Winfield Rotary Club at Sonner Stadium on the evening of the Fourth.

However, for those who choose to celebrate the Forth of July using consumer brand fireworks he offers the following fire safety guidelines:

  • Fireworks are illegal to possess, sell, store, or discharge within the city limits of Winfield. The only areas in which fireworks can be legally discharged within the unincorporated areas of Cowley County are on private property with permission from the landowner. The “shoot them where you buy them “policy does not apply. The dates in which fireworks may be discharged is from July 1 through July 4.
  • Adults should always supervise the use of fireworks by older children.
  • Never give fireworks to young children.
  • Use fireworks only in areas away from structures and dry grass.
  • Never use fireworks inside of any container.
  • Never point fireworks at people or animals.
  • Never attempt to experiment or build your own fireworks.
  • Keep everyone at a safe distance after igniting the fireworks.
  • Never attempt to relight malfunctioning fireworks.
  • Never carry fireworks in your pocket.
  • Adults should avoid the use of alcohol and fireworks.
  • Fireworks should not be discharged for or at a moving vehicle.
