Bomb threat suspect gets year probation

A Winfield High School student will spend the next year on supervised probation for making a criminal threat last March in an attempt to cause the school to be evacuated.

Michael Nathan Mason, who was 16 when the incident occurred, admitted his guilt last week to the one count filed against him in Cowley County District Court. District Judge Nick St.Peter ruled Mason a juvenile offender.

In addition to the one year probation period, Mason was ordered to perform 300 hours of community service for the school if possible, and to write a letter of apology to the Winfield Oracle.

St.Peter set a 7 p.m. curfew Sunday through Thursday and a 9 p.m. curfew Friday and Saturdays for Mason.

A second teen, Chad Todd Lewis, is charged with making a criminal threat in May to cause the high school to be evacuated. His next court hearing is 11 a.m. July 18. He was also 16 in May.

A third complaint was filed against a 12-year-old boy but the judge closed the file to the public because of the defendant’s age.

Mason will be supervised by a court services officer while serving his probationary period, according to District Court records.

Both teens were charged as juveniles.
