Disaster recovery center will close on Friday

The Cowley County Disaster Recovery Center at 1407 Wheat Road will close permanently at 6 p.m. Friday. The center in El Dorado will close at the same time.

“Closing these recovery centers does not mean we are closing down registrations for disaster assistance in Butler and Cowley counties, said Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) officer Michael Karl.

Sept. 4 is the registration deadline for those affected by the severe storms and flooding from June 26 to July 25.

“Homeowners, renters and business owners in any of the 23 counties designated for individual assistance can still register with FEMA by phone or on the Internet,” Angee Morgan, state coordinating officer said.

The counties are: Allen, Anderson, Bourbon, Butler, Chautauqua, Cherokee, Coffey, Cowley, Crawford, Edwards, Elk, Franklin, Greenwood, Harper, Labette, Linn, Miami, Montgomery, Neosho, Osage, Pawnee, Wilson and Woodson.

FEMA programs available to eligible applicants include funding for temporary disaster housing assistance and grants for serious disaster-related needs and expenses not covered by insurance or assistance programs.

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) low interest disaster loans can help homeowners, renters, businesses of all sizes, and private non-profit organizations pay for their disaster losses.
