22 apply to be Winfield’s water/power chief

More than 20 people have applied to become the city of Winfield’s next water and electric utility director, city officials said Thursday.

A review of the applications began this week and a first round of interviews is expected to begin in early September. City manager Warren Porter said he is busy trying to cull about 22 applications down to a more manageable number.

“We’ll be getting some more information about the candidates,” he said. “We have some with public sector experience and others with private sector experience.”

Porter said he has no solid time frame for a having a new person on the job. The position was vacated by Colin Whitley earlier this summer. Four of the candidates for the job were from Cowley County and others were from out of state.

Nearly all were from the Midwest.

The position oversees nearly $30 million in budgets for the electric and water utilities in Winfield.
