Animal cruelty case continued until Nov. 5

An animal cruelty case involving James A. Bell Jr., 19, has been continued to Nov. 5 to set a date for a preliminary hearing.

Bell was arrested following an incident Sept. 28 when he allegedly grabbed a cat by the tail and swung the animal until the animal’s head struck the concrete. The cat died, according to the Winfield Police Department.

Bell told police he had been drinking and was sorry about the cat.

Cruelty to animals is defined by Kansas law as intentionally killing, injuring, maiming, torturing or mutilating an animal.

A second case against Bell alleging he violated the cereal malt beverage law was also continued to Nov. 5, according to District Court records.
