Ohio quilt maker to speak in Arkansas City

A folk artist and quilt maker from Ohio is the scheduled speaker for the November meetings of the Walnut Valley Quilters Guild. Guests are welcome to attend the special program.

Sue Spargo ? who was born in Zambia before being educated and trained as a nurse in South Africa ? is featured speaker for meetings at 1 p.m and 7 p.m Nov. 12. The presentations will be held at the First United Methodist Church, 2448 Edgemont, in Arkansas City.

From Africa, Spargo moved to England, a cultural transition she says inspired many of her designs. The stark contrasts between the arid beige and browns of the African bush veld and the lush greens of the rolling hills of Southern England have continued to be a rich source of ideas. She has been influenced especially by the energy and color of traditional African designs.

Spargo moved to Connecticut in 1989 and spent time in Tennessee and Utah before arriving in Uniontown, Ohio, where she now lives.

In the business she runs she focuses on three related areas: design of quilted items using textural fabrics and embellishment, workshops and retreats, and creating books and patterns. Spargo, the mother of four children, also has a website, www.suespargo.com.

Spargo has also produced a book on quilting.

Guild members have the opportunity to attend a workshop on Nov. 11 to create a Sue Spargo design, a wool pin keeper complete with Spargo’s embellishments.
