Winter weather responsible for more wrecks

Ice-covered roads are being blamed for at least five late night and early morning accidents in rural Cowley County since Saturday, according to the sheriff’s office.

The accidents caused more than $5,000 in property damages and were responsible for at least one injury.

Saturday’s first accident took place on U.S. 160 west of 31st Road near Kellogg shortly before 9 p.m., a sheriff’s office report showed. Shahnam Hadipour of Independence, lost control of her 1991 Olds Ciera when it spun on ice and struck a 1994 Pontiac Grand Prix driven by Amber D. Stangle of Oxford. Hadipour was able to remove her vehicle, but Stangle’s was towed from the scene. Stangle’s vehicle was owned by Dwight Stangle of Oxford.

A second wreck took place on Cowley 3 north of 142nd Road, also near Kellogg, when a 1999 Chevy pickup driven by Raymond W. Pool of Arkansas City lost traction on ice and went into a ditch. Pool’s pickup rolled several times and tore down a barbed wire fence before coming to rest in a field, according to the report. Pool suffered injuries in the wreck but neither he nor his passenger, Matthew P. Hutchinson of Arkansas City, were transported to the hospital. The accident occurred at 11 p.m. and Pool’s truck was towed from the scene, the report showed.

The last accident involved a 1991 Chev pickup driven by Thongsavanh Phrakonekham of Winfield. Phrakonekham was driving on U.S. 160 east of 11th Road and west of Kellogg when his pickup hit ice. Phrakonekham lost control and drove into a ditch. The vehicle rolled, coming to rest on its top, and was later towed from the scene. The accident took place at 11:30 p.m.

The other two accidents occurred early Monday morning, reports showed. At 6:15 a.m. Greg Watts of Arkansas City was driving his 1999 Saturn up a hill on 256th Road east of U.S. 77 when the vehicle began to slide backwards. Watts’ car slid into a 1984 Dodge Ram driven by William Deneve, also of Arkansas City.

Ten minutes later Luis Cervantes of Arkansas City lost control on ice while driving on 202nd Road west of 31st Road. Cervantes’ 1994 Chevy pickup was damaged in the wreck.
