Burden teen hydroplanes Saturday; hits pole

A Burden teen was injured early Saturday when the vehicle she was driving hydroplaned on a rain-slicked U.S. 160 and hit a utility pole, according to a report from the Cowley County Sheriff’s Department.

Bionca Maye Beamer, 17, was westbound on the highway a few miles east of Winfield when the 2004 Ford F-150 she was driving began to hydroplane.

The truck left the roadway, hit the utility pole and then struck a fence before coming to a stop. The accident happened around 5:30 a.m.

Beamer was transported to William Newton Hospital for evaluation but was able to speak with a sheriff’s investigator about the accident. She said her speed was only 55 to 60 miles per hour to account for the rain on the road, according to the report.

It is not known whether Beamer was wearing a seatbelt.
