Attempted murder charge filed in shootout

A Wichita man has been charged with attempted first degree murder in connection with a shoot-out at the Jump Start convenience store in Winfield last October.

Robert L. White, 26, is accused of intentionally and with premeditation trying to kill Aaron Brown, 26. Brown was struck by one of the nearly two dozen shots fired following a verbal altercation at the convenience store on Main.

Cowley County Attorney Chris Smith said White is the only person who has been charged at this time. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for 9 a.m. April 4. White is being held in the Cowley County jail in lieu of $50,000 bond.

The penalty for attempted first degree murder – a severity level one person felony – ranges from a minimum of 12 years to a maximum 54 years in prison and a fine of up to $300,000.

White is also charged with a single count of misdemeanor theft for allegedly stealing a pack of cigarettes from the store. The penalty for the nonperson misdemeanor is a maximum of one year in the county jail and a fine of up to $2,500.

White was arrested in Mulvane shortly after the shooting and was taken to the Sedgwick County jail on a charge unrelated to the Jump Start shooting.
The charge against White was filed Jan. 31 and he already has appeared in court once. He is being represented by local attorney David Maslen.

There are 32 people listed on the complaint as witnesses.
