Free breakfast, lunch program returns in AC

A popular program that provides free summer meals for Arkansas City students will be back for a second straight year beginning Monday, school district officials said Thursday.

Breakfast and lunch will be served free of charge to children from one to 18 years of age Monday through Thursday until July 17. Parents can take their children to one of the open sites in town where the meals will be served.

The local sites are Roosevelt Elementary, Ark City Middle School and Jefferson Elementary. Breakfast will be served from 8:30 to 9:00a.m. and lunch will be from 12:00 to 12:30p.m.

Food will be served as long as summer school is in session.

Chartwells, the school food service provider during the regular school year, will be serving the meals this summer. Chartwells offers quality foods and menus that follow the Recommended Dietary Allowances for calcium, calories, protein, iron and vitamins A and D.

The meals are offered as part of the United States Department of Agriculture’s Summer Food Service Program.

The USDA will reimburse the school district for the costs associated with the program, so the funding will not come out of the district’s general fund.
