Goodwin, Kelley file for new terms in Topeka

With less than six days to file for an elective office, two veteran lawmakers are asking voters to send them back to Topeka for additional terms in office.

Both Sen. Greta Goodwin, D-Winfield, and Rep. Kasha Kelley, R-Arkansas City, filed with the Kansas Secretary of? State’s Office in Topeka on Thursday.

There was some speculation early-on that Kelley might run for Goodwin’s seat but she announced recently that she had decided to run again for a House seat.

Goodwin was a state representative before she was first elected to the Senate in 1997. A certified legal assistant, Goodwin is the ranking member of the Judiciary Committee, and a member of the Confirmation Oversight Committee, Joint Committee on Corrections and Juvenile Justice Oversight Commisson, the Joint Committee on State Building Construction, and?transportation and ways and means committees.

Kelley is CEO of the Customer Retention Co. Her first term in the House was in 2005. She is a member of the Commerce and Labor?Committee, vice chair of the General Government Budget Committee and a member of the Government Efficiency and Technology Committee.

The third member of the Cowley County legislative delegation, Rep. Ed Trimmer, D-Winfield, filed for an additional term?Tuesday. He was first appointed to the House to fill a vacancy and then was elected in 2006.

Neither Trimmer, Kelley or Goodwin face opposition at the current time. However, an Arkansas City man, Gene Burr, had his signature attested in the Cowley County Clerk’s office Thursday and indicated he might file for the House seat Kelley occupies.

Senators serve four years and representatives serve two year terms. The filing deadline is noon June 10. Candidates for state offices must file with the Secretary of State.? The primary will be held Aug. 5 and the general election Nov. 4. Voter registration books are open.?
