Truck driver set for trial in Sumner County

A jury trial has been set for Sept. 23 for a Salina truck driver charged with two counts of vehicular homicide.

The date was set for Lanny Carter, 45, during a hearing in Sumner County District Court last Thursday, according to Ashley Anstaett, a spokeswoman for the Kansas Attorney General"s Office. Carter did not appear.

His defense attorney entered a not guilty plea for Carter, Anstaett said.

Carter is accused of running a stop sign last July and smashing into a van. Katherine "Kat" Tredway, 10, and Thomas Alexander, 11, died in the accident on K-53 and U81. The family was traveling to a family event in Wichita in two separate vehicles. The one carrying the cousins left before the second one. Other members of the family were also injured.

The Tredway child was the granddaughter of an Oxford police officer and the daughter of a Wellington police officer.
