Salina trucker charged in Sumner fatalities

A truck driver from Salina ? who was involved in a traffic accident last July that claimed the lives of two children ? faces criminal charges in Sumner County District Court.

Lanny Carter, 45 at the time of the accident, turned himself into Sumner County authorities Saturday and immediately posted bail, according to Ashley Anstaett, spokeswoman for Kansas Attorney General Steve Six.

Kathrine “Kat” Tredway, 10, and Thomas Alexander, 11, died when the 2500 Chevrolet Truck Carter was driving ran a stop sign at Kansas 53 and U.S. 81 highways and smashed into the van the children were riding in.

The Tredway child was the granddaughter of Oxford police officer Bill Tredway and daughter of Wellington police officer Mike Tredway.? Kat and Thomas were cousins.

Carter is charged with two counts of vehicular homicide, a class A person misdemeanor, and one count failure to stop at a stop sign. He is to appear in court at 9 a.m. April 24.

The family was going to Wichita to attend a family event. Debra Alexander, Devena Tredway’s sister, was driving the 1999 Oldsmobile Van.

Their mother, Linda Terry, was a passenger along with Michaela Alexander and the two children who were killed. The three adults were all injured and two of the three were hospitalized for a time. The Alexander’s were visiting from Haughton, La.

Mike Tredway and his wife left Wellington a short time after the van their child was in and were detoured because of the wreck – not knowing at the time their family was involved.

The investigation was turned over to the Attorney General’s Office last fall by the Sumner County Attorney’s Office.
