Sumner casino: Site review starts next week

Public hearings scheduled for late October will give area residents an opportunity to hear proposals from developers wanting to put a casino in Sumner County. Commissioners there will decide Oct. 31 which plan to endorse.

There has been some contention regarding whether the casino should be located near Wellington or along the Kansas Turnpike closer to Mulvane. Sumner County residents approved expanded gambling by a vote in 2005.

Here is a brief time line Sumner County has made available to the public:

WEDNESDAY: Developers must submit proposals no later than noon. County commissioners and a proposal comparison committee will receive copies by 1 p.m.

THURSDAY: The proposal committee will meet at 9 a.m. to draft a proposal summary and comparison spreadsheet that will be provided to commissioners no later than the following day.

OCT. 29 and 30: Hearings at the Raymond Frye Complex, 320 N. Jefferson, in Wellington.

Developers for each proposal will have 90 minutes to make a presentation to commissioners and answer questions. Each development group is allowed to make multiple proposals at more than one location.

Starting time on the first day will be determined by the number of proposals received.

Those interested in making comments must sign up no later than noon Oct. 29. Time for comment will be limited to three minutes per person and the public comment session will begin following the noon recess Oct. 30.
