Trucker gets 2 years for role in Sumner crash

A Salina truck driver will spend two years in jail in connection with the deaths of two cousins in a traffic accident in Sumner County a year ago.

Lanny Carter, 45 when the accident occurred, was found guilty of two counts of vehicular homicide and one stop sign infraction.

Carter pleaded not guilty during a bench trial Oct. 9 held by Judge Scott McQuinn. The judge continued the case until last Friday afternoon when he ruled that Carter was guilty.

Carter ran a stop sign at K-53 and U.S. 81 highway and smashed into a van. Katherine "Kat" Tredway, 10, and Thomas Alexander, 11, were killed. Other family members were injured.

The girl’s father and grandfather are Sumner County law enforcement officers. The boy’s family was visiting from out of state. They were all headed to a family function in Wichita in two vehicles.
