Trash fire leads to blaze that burns area shed

What started as a burning trash pile Thursday, turned into a grass fire that torched a machine shed, near the Sumner-Cowley County line, fire officials said.

Fire crews from Ark City, Winfield and Sumner County were called to 1574 200th Rd, also known as Stateline Rd., for the report of a controlled burn that was no longer under control.

It appears a trash fire started some grass burning and eventually the shed caught fire, according to Ken Corcran, of the Ark City Fire Dept.

The shed’s owner was not home at the time and therefor the extent of damage to items in the shed, is not known.

The structure, which is located in Sumner Co. southwest of Ark City, was engulfed in flames when fire personnel arrived. There were no injuries involved with the blaze, which started around 3 p.m.

Warmer and dryer weather is thought to have created ideal conditions for the fire.
