Air Conditioner blamed for small Oxford fire

A faulty air conditioner likely caused a minor fire at a small mobile home in Oxford that sent one person to a hospital Sunday afternoon. One firefighter was also overcome by the heat, Oxford fire chief Carl Dennett said.

"It was 100-plus outside. Putting turn-out gear on is like putting on five blankets," he said.

The firefighter who got too hot was put into an air conditioned truck until he cooled down, according to Dennett. One of the residents of the home also got overheated and was taken to a hospital to be evaluated. His name was not available.

The problems began at 4:13 p.m. when Pam McClure, another resident, said something in the window air conditioning unit sounded "like it blew up," Dennett said. "They called 911 which was a good deal because they done it early and it (the fire) didn’t hardly do any damage to the trailer."

The volunteer department was backed up by the Wellington Fire Department. "We didn’t need them, but we was sure glad to see them," the chief said.
