Four family members ? including a child ? were able to escape a major house fire at the corner of Ninth and W. Kansas in Ark City early Thursday, fire officials said.
No significant injuries were reported.
The blaze was said to have caused significant damage to the home. The family, who has yet to be named, sensed something was wrong with a fireplace and saw smoke.
Fire is said to have started burning in the area of a chimney flue at the back of the house. The owner of the home, JoAnn Withers, said the family had a fire going in the fireplace at the time and began hearing strange sounds.
The family went outside to find the chimney of the home fully engulfed in flames and called 911.
