Humane Society hosting 5th birthday party

Cheaper adoption fees, hotdogs, popcorn and cake and ice cream will be part of the Cowley County Humane Society’s fifth birthday party, society officials announced this week.

The party is set to begin at 10 a.m. Aug. 9 at the shelter facility just southeast of Strother Field. Cake will be served after a ceremonial singing of Happy Birthday at 1 p.m.

A lesson on making balloon animals will also be offered.

The birthday party marks the five-year anniversary of the animal shelter, which opened in Aug. 2003. To celebrate, the Humane Society is also offering a discount on animal adoptions that will run from Aug. 9 to Aug. 15.

Birthday adoption special fees are set at $35 for dogs and $25 for cats. All animals are spayed or neutered and have been vaccinated. Last year, during the week of the birthday party, 50 animals were adopted, shelter officials said.

"Everyone here works really hard to get these animals placed into loving homes and, although the birthday party requires a lot of energy, it is so rewarding to celebrate the fruits of your labor in this way," said CCHS Board President Sue Tompkins. "We hope everyone joins us in celebrating five great years. We couldn’t continue to move forward as an organization without all the community support we’ve received."

Since it opened, the shelter has helped find permanent homes for 700 animals. The Humane Society employs 3 full-time people and volunteer hours equate to hours worked by 1.75 full-time employees.
