An Arkansas City man was arrested Tuesday night on six counts of rape and one count of sexual battery of two elderly women who live together, according to Ark City Police Capt. Tom Scott.
Bruce A. Hays, 41, a local mechanic, lived with the alleged victims for a time during 2007. He moved out early this year but moved just down the street so still had access to the women.
"Basically, he befriended them and took advantage of them," Scott said.
Hays went back to the women’s home last night for a visit, made some advances, and one woman decided enough was enough and called the police department.
The offenses occurred between Sept. 1, 2007 and July 28, 2008. Scott said the women grew up during a time when such incidents were not reported but kept within a family or the victims would be considered "trash" and blamed for causing the incident.
Hays, who has not formally been charged by the County attorney, is being held on $38,500 bond, Scott said.
