AC man critical after being hit by teen driver

An Arkansas City man – struck Monday evening by a motor vehicle while walking his dog – was in critical condition Tuesday morning at a Wichita hospital.

David James Potts, 41, suffered severe trauma to the head and lower body, Arkansas City Police Chief Sean Wallace said.

The accident occurred about 7 p.m. at Summit Street and the U.S. 77 bypass. Potts was standing in the middle of the intersection waiting for a car to pass when he was struck by a vehicle being driven by Geoffrey Ellis, 17, of Ark City, according to Wallace.

Witnesses and bystanders were trying to help Potts when police arrived. Potts was transported by South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center in Ark City and then flown by medical helicopter to Via Christi Regional Medical Center – St. Francis Campus.

Ellis was not injured and was not charged in connection with the accident. The dog was not injured either.
