Local student’s drawing picked for calendar

A Winfield Middle School student is one of 13 students from across the state selected as winners in the 2009 Kansas Don’t Spoil It! Calendar Contest sponsored by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.

Lauren Moore, a seventh grade student, was among thousands who submitted original artwork that promotes recycling, reusing materials and reducing waste.

The contest winners met Nov. 17 with Gov. Kathleen Sebelious and received an enlarged version of their artwork signed by the governor and Roderick L. Bremby, Secretary of the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.

"KDHE has seen increased participation in this contest over the years, as teachers use it in the classroom to teach art skills and environmental awareness," Bremby said. "It’s been our privilege to judge so many impressive entries turned in by talented student artists from across Kansas."

Copies of the calendar will be printed and distributed by January 2009 to Kansas schools, local governments and businesses. To place an order for the calendar, call 1-800-282-9790.
