Small electrical fire damages Winfield house

Properly functioning smoke detectors and quick thinking helped a Winfield woman escape a minor house fire Thursday morning, fire officials said.

Firefighters responded to 211 Michigan around 11:30 this morning for the report of a structure fire, according to Fire Capt. Stuart Cassaboom. The house is a rental property and a female resident of the home was there when the fire started.

Her name is not being released at this time.

"She was at home and had smoke detectors and they worked," Cassaboom said. "She got out without any problem."

Damage was confined to ceilings in the kitchen and bathroom and part of a wall. The cause was electrical.

"It was due to some old wires," Cassaboom said. "We won’t know exactly what happened until we get an electrician out there."

The home’s electricity has been disabled until appropriate repairs are made. Firefighters were at the scene for about two hours.

"It wasn’t a bad fire at all," Cassaboom said. "It was caught very early and we managed to keep damage to a minimum. It could’ve been a lot worse."
