Frigid temperatures hit locally, country wide

It’s colder here than in Russia. It’s 20 degrees there with a wind chill of 12 degrees. It was only 15 degrees here mid-morning Monday. The wind chill was one degree.

On the other hand, it’s 78 degrees in Hawaii and 73 degrees in Bermuda. If you live in the northeast and are tempted to leave the cold behind and join the Hawaiians or Bermudans – forget it.

Boston has had 50 straight hours of snow. Maine has over a foot of snow on the ground. Portland, Ore. recorded 11 inches. Water pipes burst in Indiana. Most airports from one coast to the other are shut down by bad weather, and many are running out of food and bottled water for the thousands stranded here and there trying to get home for the holidays. Don’t even think about Amtrack.

The Christmas week forecast doesn’t look so bad here now, does it? Cold? No big deal. A gusty sound wind that will likely become stronger across central Kansas? What’s a little wind as long as you’re not a firefighter. Speaking of firefighters, there’s a "high to very high" fire danger across the Flint Hills, central and south central Kansas. Those of us who are not firefighters will think of you.

Seriously folks, there is the possibility of some patchy freezing drizzle in south central Kansas tonight, and maybe a little rain, ice and wind Tuesday morning. This is Kansas. What do you expect?

Doesn’t look good for a white Christmas, I’m not sorry to say. Santa will get around just fine without it. And with the cold, the manufacturers of cold medicine will make a killing and there will be one less industry begging taxpayers for a handout.
