Winfield man killed when van rolls onto him

A 49-year-old Winfield man died early Saturday morning when he was partially ejected from the van he was driving and the vehicle came to rest on top of him, Cowley County Undersheriff Bill Mueller said.

Curtis Lee Rowe was northbound in the Dunbar Hill area on 85th Road, about a mile south of 242nd Road when he lost control of his Dodge mini van. The van went off the west side of the road and struck rocks that caused it to flip upside down.

Rowe was pronounced dead at the scene around 3 a.m.

Two passengers, Ricky Lee Robinson, 25, Winfield, and Timothy L. Patton, 21, Derby, were taken to South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center and were being treat for injuries not believed to be life-threatening.

Testing will be conducted to determine whether alcohol played a factor in the accident.

The accident scene is located southwest of Strother Field between Arkansas City and Winfield. You can navigate the location of the accident on the map below.
