Weather wrecks keep crews busy Tue/Wed

Slick roads sent kept emergency responders busy Tuesday and into early Wednesday morning. The Cowley County Sheriff’s Office investigated 11 wrecks between noon Tuesday and 2 a.m. Wednesday.

Sheriff Don Read said seven of the accidents involved property damage of more than $1,000 and three sustained less than $1,000 damage. Only one minor injury was reported.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported two accidents that involved injuries. The first occurred at 2:38 p.m. Tuesday after a passenger truck being driven by Jane Jones of Arkansas City slid off U.S. 77 into a ditch and down an embankment.

Jones, 58, was taken by Newton Memorial Hospital to be evaluated.

Chelsie Zavala, 18, of Wellington, suffered possible injuries about 5 p.m. when her sport utility vehicle slid on the ice at the intersection of 21st and 112th roads. The vehicle rolled into a west ditch. She was also taken to the Winfield hospital to be evaluated.
